Italy, Malta sign cooperation deals with Libya [Français] [Español] The
Italian government has renewed its 2017 agreement with Libya, under
which Italy provides funding to the Libyan detention centres, as well as
healthcare assistance, medicine, and training for Libyan staff working
in the facilities. More on InfoMigrants. According
to media reports, Malta had also negotiated a secret deal with Libya to
allow the Armed Forces of Malta to intercept migrants heading towards
the island and return them to the Libyan coastguard. More on Times of Malta. In
the meantime, a leaked report from the EU Council shows that the EU is
unable to monitor the Libyan coastguard and recognises that the
detention of migrants is a “profitable business model” for Libya’s
government. More on the Guardian. |
