Following the designation of the EU Commissioners on 10 September 2014, the European Parliament will organise hearings for all the Commissioner-designates before voting to approve all the new Commission members. These hearings will take place between 29 September and 7 October and also provide an opportunity for civil society organisations to encourage Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to ask the Commissioner-Designates crucial questions concerning their priorities in the new portfolios.
PICUM has asked MEPs to propose questions relating to the human rights of undocumented migrants to the First Vice-President-Designate (Frans Timmermans) and four Commissioner-Designates: Migration and Home Affairs (Dimitris Avramopoulos); Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality (Věra Jourová); Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labour Mobility (Marianne Thyssen); and Health and Food Safety (Vytenis Andriukaitis). Please read the questions and briefing note HERE.
The proposed questions reflect the concerns highlighted in PICUM’s Five Point Plan for EU Home Affairs for 2015-2019 and examine if and how the different Commissioner-Designates would contribute to the respect for the fundamental rights of all migrants in the EU, irrespective of migration or residence status.
PICUM together with 15 other leading organisations working on the rights of the child have also proposed joint questions on migrant children’s rights for Mr. Dimitris Avramopoulos, Commissioner-designate for Migration and Home Affairs. To read these joint questions, click
