PICUM Submission UN Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families (CMW)

PICUM's made a submission to the Day of General Discussion (DGD) on Workplace Exploitation and Workplace Protection of the UN Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families (CMW) held in Geneva on 7 April 2014. The paper highlights concerns regarding workplace exploitation of migrant workers, with particular attention to the challenges faced by undocumented migrant workers and their families and the impacts on poverty, human rights and migrant workers’ economic empowerment and ability to access justice and redress mechanisms.

Joint letter to European Commission President, José Manuel Barroso

PICUM, together with other migrants’ rights and children’s rights organisations wrote a letter to EU Commission President, José Manuel Barroso, on 18 February 2014 urging to develop a more coherent and rights-based policy approach towards migrant children for the European Commission's new Justice and Home Affairs policies "post-Stockholm" programme. The letter asks for future Home Affairs policy to address existing shortcomings in meeting the EU’s legal obligations towards migrant children, and that children’s rights become a strategic and actionable priority for EU Home Affairs policy in the coming years.

EU Commission DG Home - Joint submission on children's rights

PICUM, jointly submitted a paper with other migrants’ and children’s rights organisations to the European Commission’s DG Home Consultation: “Debate on the future of Home Affairs policies: An open and safe Europe – what next?” in January 2014. The submission calls for the EU Commission to ensure that children’s rights and all the rights enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child are guaranteed in the strategic guidelines for Home Affairs from 2015.

PICUM Five-Point Action Plan for the Strategic Guidelines for Home Affairs from 2015

PICUM submitted a five-point action plan to the European Commission's development of strategic guidelines in the area of Justice and Home Affairs. The action plan addresses the shortcomings in the current approach and sets out action points to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of EU migration policy to ensure that fundamental rights of undocumented migrants are considered. The EU Commission's new programme will largely define the future of EU policies on migration and asylum in the coming five years and will replace the current Stockholm Programme.

PICUM Submission to the CRC General Comment on the Right of the Child

PICUM's submission to the CRC General Comment on the right of the child highlights the need to ensure access to health care for undocumented children and outlines existing barriers to this fundamental right.The submission makes the case for acting in the best interests of all children and to end restrictions of basic social rights for children in an irregular migration situation.
