The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) was set up in 1973 to promote the interests of working people at the European level and to represent them in the EU institutions. The ETUC membership presently consists of 76 national trade union confederations from 34 European countries, as well as 11 European industry federations, making a total of 60 million members, plus observer organizations in Macedonia and Serbia. The ETUC is one of the European social partners and is recognized by the European Union, by the Council of Europe and by EFTA as the only representative cross-sectoral trade union organization at the European level.
