Global Forum on Migration and Development and Civil Society Days 2014
The Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) will take place in Stockholm, Sweden from 14 to 16 May 2014. Hosted by the Swedish government this year, the GFMD is a non-binding, government-led process open to all States Members and Observers of the United Nations, to advance understanding and cooperation on migration and development and to foster practical and action-oriented outcomes.
Facilitating civil society input to these discussions, the Civil Society Days will be held the days before the GFMD from 12 to 13 May in Stockholm and will bring together over 200 migrant and civil society leaders from all over the world. The Civil Society Days result in a statement with messages and recommendations for governments.
PICUM’s Director, Michele LeVoy, will be this year’s chair of the Civil Society Days and will deliver these messages and recommendations to the audience of national and global leaders including United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon during a ‘Common Space’ on 14 May in Stockholm.
Prior to these events, the People's Global Action on Migration, Development and Human Rights (PGA) will take place in Stockholm from 9 to 11 May. The PGA aims to give a voice and encourage leadership of organised grassroots migrant and diaspora networks and communities from around the world; to share information, dialogue, strengthen analyses and develop joint actions and campaigns on current and emerging issues related to migration.
PICUM is co-organiser of several workshops:
At the PGA:
- On the Lives & Strategies of Undocumented Women in Sweden, Saturday, 10 May
- Criminalization, Detention, & Child Rights at the GFMD (and beyond): A global strategy for ending the immigration detention of children (together with the International Detention Coalition, IDC and Terre des Hommes), Sunday, 11 May.
