“Undocumented and irregular migration: policy developments, data and social implications,” is a new report by PICUM on a workshop organized by the European Commission, DG Research. The objective of this workshop was to present the main results of the DG Research projects CLANDESTINO and Undocumented Workers in Transition (UWT) to the policy community based in Brussels. The main topics discussed in the workshop were the CLANDESTINO database on irregular migration which presents and classifies (as low, medium or high quality) estimates and data on irregular migration in the European Union and in selected member states; the possible ways through which migrants become irregular and regularized; the impact of irregular migration in EU labour markets and the impact of member states’ policies on regular and irregular migration. The report is available online at: http://www.picum.org/sites/default/files/data/Publications/Clandestino%2... . New findings of the European research project CLANDESTINO are now available online. The project’s database, which concentrates on stocks, includes now also three brief summaries on undocumented migration flows concerning three countries: Austria, Germany and the United Kingdom. The database is available on line at: http://irregular-migration.hwwi.net/ .

PICUM has recently launched a new website. Membership applications, volunteering requests and newsletter subscriptions are now processed through the website. We hope this redesigned and user friendly website will help us to be more efficient in promoting respect for the human rights of undocumented migrants. We also hope to have the seven language versions soon available (and express our gratitude to the numerous volunteers who have helped us so far with these translations). You can also help us in visiting the site and sending your comments to communication@picum.org.

Social Watch published its first European report, “Migrants in Europe as Development Actors: Between Hope and Vulnerability”, which focuses on the links between migration and development and the role that migrants play - both as contributors to the European society and to the development of their countries of origin. PICUM Program Officer Eve Geddie contributed to this report with “Undocumented Migrant’s Right to Health and Education in Europe: Protection Needs vs Immigration Control”. The report can be downloaded at: http://www.eurostep.org/wcm/dmdocuments/Book_ESW_2009.pdf .
